Silver Avenue Bike Boulevard?

How will BikeABQ create more safe, low-traffic routes?

Here is their plan...

In Phase I of our campaign, we'll be advocating to get the Silver Avenue designated as the cities first bicycle boulevard. We will achieve this goal by a) working with neighbors, neighborhood associations, and merchants to demonstrate strong local support. b) advocating for this project via news media and other outlets, and c) bringing this grassroots support to the attention of city councilors and the mayor to pass the necessary verbiage. This designation will include developing unique signage.

Phase II will involve determining and implementing appropriate traffic calming and ways to improve arterial crossings. These measures are designed to slow traffic bringing parity to bikers and automobiles. Appropriate traffic calming elements are essential to avoid undo diversions onto other residential streets. When traffic is slowed stop sign can be turned to permit unimpeded free-flow traffic, stopping only at major roads.

In Phase III, we'll verify the efficacy of the Silver Bicycle Boulevard Pilot Project, and begin advocating for a network of optimized bicycle routes. Many existing bicycle routes such as Copper, Mountain, and Edith already use traffic calming elements. These routes can be optimized, extended, and interconnected in order to satisfy the needs and desires of would-be and inexperienced bikers as well as experienced commuters.
